The 13th annual Ben Sapp Memorial Shed Hunt for Youth took place at the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Center at Mark Twain Lake on Saturday, February 22, as a large crowd of youngsters, parents, grandparents and friends took advantage of the opportunity to find shed antlers.
Sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake, in partnership with the Monroe City Whitetails Unlimited Chapter, the Mark Twain Lake Visitors and Educational Resource Center Committee, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Mark Twain State Park, the goal of this free event is to introduce interested youth to the outdoors.
Children 2 to 12 years of age were able to hunt for shed antlers along the Eagle Bluff Trail at the Visitor Center, where sheds were placed along the trail and in the woods to give them an idea of what a real shed find will feel like.
Inside the Visitor Center lobby, informational booths from various groups highlighting information on deer and other related outdoor topics were set up throughout the day, while the Monroe City Whitetails Unlimited Chapter provided a lunch of hot dogs, soup and chips. In addition, youngsters got a chance to make animal tracks and cook popcorn over an open fire at the Ben Sapp Outdoor Pavilion.
The event was free for all age groups but pre-registration was required.
